You'll get better rates.Without a halfway decent credit score, you're not going to be able to find an unsecured card with a decent interest rate. Myesha Zerbe: There is absolutely no way to predict what credit limit a company will give you.The ding on your score is not great - so do not fear applying for 2 or 3 cards.And the inquiries drop off your report after about 6 months.What is going to damage your score is carrying balances.Carrying balances can destroy credit and in some cases destroy lives.If you have to carry a balance, make it a goal in your life to pay it off ASAP.From then on, use your card to charge something you need like food or gas, and pay for it in full.Please remember, a small ding for opening ! a credit account is minor to the devastation you will be causing by carrying balances./...Show more
Terrell Voltz: Do not be afraid of comparing cards and their rates and features. Do a little research to determine what kind of card you are interested in: airline miles, cash back or regular. Apply for maybe two and the inquiry falls off in a few months. It is nothing negative. The only negative marks are those made on your behalf in terms of not managing the account / payments etc. So go ahead and apply because checking your credit will be necessary to apply for credit, car loan and mortgage so break the habit of being afraid.
