The term serious means "of, showing, or characterized by deep thought." (from dictionary.com) If you want a relationship without love then just be acquaintances. Love makes a relationship work by allowing both party to put in their effort to make the relationship work. If there are other means, it would probably be that one of the party is being hired to be supposedly in a serious relationship or someone is just in it for the money or some other materialistic thing. A strong relationship is based on trust and communication. You have to be able to trust your significant other to be able to do things without your input or you being there. When you love someone they are better looking, funnier, you would do anything for them including die, you want to be with them until they are old and wrinkly or fat or sick. If you don't love someone, you only want to be with them when everything is going well, and when it gets bad, you want out.

When you "like" somebody, you are not as committed to them as you would be if you were in love. You'll know when you truly love someone because you'll love them unconditionally, you'll be willing to go to certain lengths to be with them. This is a deeper, or more 'serious' relationship.
