what are the possible shortcomings of american preschools?

Tijuana Tatsak: Stressing academics over social/emotional development is the biggest weakness I've seen (I am a former preschool teacher but am taking break while I homeschool my children). There are excellent, well rounded curriculums, like The Creative Curriculum, that allow preschool teachers to focus on the whole child, and not introduce rote academics too early.

Scot Sepulbeda: Some of the weaknesses of preschool are teachers do not always have time to give each student individual attention, due to the sometimes large classes. Another weakness is some children come to school hungry, and not all preschools have a breakfast program. Children cannot comprehend adequately when hungry. Teachers have to reconcile with the fact that some parents just do not care about their children nor their grades. It is a sad situation, and I have seen this many times. Many preschools lack funding and do not have enough manipulatives for children to learn with. Most new teachers co! ming into school have few or none and have to buy everything for the classroom themselves, and that can be very expensive. The playground equipment is not always up to standards, and this should be checked periodically. When a child brings his or her lunch to school, it has to be kept to a certain temperature according to DSS regulations...sometimes this is not met. In some schools, the electrical sockets are not always out of reach of young children.(This is another DSS problem). I hope this helps a bit. So many preschools do not meet the DSS regulations. That is a bit scarey to me....Show more
